Marquette Rolls Past New Mexico, 62-52

MILWAUKEE -- Senior McKayla Yentz poured in a season-high 16 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures as the Marquette women's basketball team topped New Mexico, 62-52 on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Natisha Hiedeman added 13 points with seven rebounds and six assists, while classmate Danielle King notched 11 points and pulled down six boards. Erika Davenport recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she tallied 10 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Allazia Blockton took down 10 boards as Marquette (9-2) combined to outrebound the Lobos (4-6), 53-39.
With a 9-2 non-conference record the Golden Eagles have produced their best non-conference slate since the 2013-14 season that also tallied a 9-2 mark before beginning BIG EAST play.
Marquette struggled from the floor shooting just 32.4 percent (23-71), but connected on 10- three-point baskets, including four a piece from Yentz and Hiedeman.
The Golden Eagles held just a one point lead, 34-33 at halftime, but had an offensive surge in the third quarter as they outscored New Mexico 13-6 in that frame. In the fourth quarter MU took its largest lead, 60-43, after a long range shot from Hiedeman and King closed out the game connecting on two free throws with 38 seconds remaining.
Marquette has one week off and will open BIG EAST play at Villanova on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. Central time. The game will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via Fox Sports GO, and can also be seen locally on Fox Sports Wisconsin.
