Marquette Defeats Butler 61-59 on the Road

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- The Marquette women's basketball team (10-2, 1-0) opened the BIG EAST season with a 61-59 victory over Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday evening using a second half offensive surge to overpower the Bulldogs (5-7, 0-1).
Junior Apiew Ojulu and sophomores Brooklyn Pumroy and Lauren Tibbs each recorded 11 points to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. The trio also each grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Katie Young led on the glass with eight caroms.
MU shot 34.4 percent (22-64) from the floor in the game, including 43.3 percent in the second half. The Bulldogs finished the day shooting 36.2 percent (21-58).
Taylor Schippers led all scorers with 16 points for Butler, while Daress McClung contributed 13 points.
The Golden Eagles continued to show their domination on the glass and outrebounded Butler, 45-31.
MU connected on five free throws to stay in the game while going three minutes without hitting a field goal. Tibbs snapped the stretch with a lay-up at the 5:20 mark. The Golden Eagles took a 56-55 lead after junior Chelsie Butler sank two shots at the charity stripe with 3:22 remaining in the game.
Butler led for much of the first half, though never more than five points. Junior Arlesia Morse drained a 3-pointer at the 9:26 mark in the first, which gave MU its first lead 15-12. The lead traded back-and-forth and the Bulldogs went into the break with a 26-23 advantage.
Marquette shot 26.5 percent (9-34) from the floor, while Butler shot 39.1 percent (9-23) in the frame.
Marquette will return home to host Villanova Tuesday, Dec. 31. Tip-off is set for noon at the Al McGuire Center.
