MU Bests St. John's, 74-72 in Overtime
Dec. 28, 2017
MILWAUKEE-- In an exciting BIG EAST opener and overtime ending, the Marquette University women's basketball team took down St. John's, 74-72, on Thursday night at the Al McGuire Center.
The overtime contest marked MU's third of the season and second-straight, but its first victory in such a circumstance.
The Golden Eagles (7-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) were led by four scorers in double figures, highlighted by a 19-point showing from Allazia Blockton and a double-double recorded by Lauren Van Kleunen (12 points, 11 rebounds), which was the first in her career. Natisha Hiedeman was a board shy of a double-double night (14 points, nine rebounds) and Amani Wilborn chipped in 12 points as well.
The conference lidlifter was close all the way through, but the Red Storm's largest lead was just a single point in the entire contest. A 7-0 run by St. John's in the fourth quarter helped propel the squad beyond regulation, but Marquette was able to pull away after a quick layup from Danielle King, a three from Wilborn and a pair of free throws from Blockton.
The Golden Eagles tallied 29 points on the fast break to St. John's 18, and owned the edge in points off turnovers (20-15) despite committing 27 of their own.
The Red Storm (7-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) were led by Alisha Kebbe with 16 points, and Qadashah Hoppie and Andrayah Adams added 13 apiece.
Marquette continues league play against Seton Hall at home on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Central time, live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
