Dec. 30, 2017
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders as it downed Seton Hall, 97-84, in Saturday night's BIG EAST contest at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (8-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) were led by Allazia Blockton with a season-high 29 points. Erika Davenport poured in 21 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double this season and Natisha Hiedeman chipped in 14 points to round out double-figure scoring for Marquette.
The Pirates (8-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) shot better from the field and beyond the arc than MU, but were set back by 22 turnovers that Marquette converted for 36 points. The Golden Eagles also dominated the paint and tallied 60 points down low, double that of Seton Hall and pulled down 46 rebounds to just 23 from the Pirates.
The Pirates were led by Donnaizha Fountain with 16 points, but their bench tallied 51 of their total points to carry SHU's offense.
"We've been talking about rebounding for the last two weeks," head coach Carolyn Kieger said. "We've lost a couple games because of rebounding and after Notre Dame we got together to make rebounding a focus for the start of BIG EAST play. As a coach, I am very happy with our performance on the glass tonight.
"My favorite stat of the night was 27 assists to nine turnovers," Kieger added. "That's phenomenal. If we can keep sharing the ball like that and taking care of it, we are going to be pretty hard to beat."
Marquette continues league play by welcoming DePaul to the Al McGuire Center on Thursday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Central time, which will air live on FS Wisconsin and Fox Sports GO.
