MU Resumes BIG EAST Play at No. 14/13 Louisville Tuesday

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. – The Marquette University women’s basketball team will resume BIG EAST Conference play Tuesday, Jan. 3, at No. 14/13 Louisville. Tip-off at the KFC YUM! Center is set for 6 p.m. CT. A live video stream of the game will be available on a pay-per-view basis courtesy of UofLSports.com.
The Golden Eagles enter their first game of 2012 as winners of their last four contests. Marquette wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 69-60 win at Toledo on Saturday. Four Golden Eagles scored at least 10 points, including sophomore Katie Young. Young finished the game with a career-high 11 points and scored nine of those during a two-minute stretch to help Marquette take a 12-point lead.
Marquette has played two ranked opponents this season with both contests being played on the road. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 against teams in the top 25 suffering losses at then-No. 23/17 Green Bay (66-50) and at No. 3/3 Notre Dame (93-44).
Since a lopsided loss at then-No. 12 Kentucky on Dec. 4, 2011, the Cardinals have compiled five straight wins, including its BIG EAST Conference opener at Cincinnati, 64-59. Shoni Schimmel, a preseason All-BIG EAST selection, leads the Cardinals with 14.0 points per game. Becky Burke and Bria Smith follow with 11.8 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.
Louisville was selected to finish third in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll.
Marquette is 9-13 all-time against Louisville, 2-4 as BIG EAST Conference foes. Louisville has won three of the last four meetings, including the last two in Louisville (at Freedom Hall), 79-69 on Jan. 23, 2008 and 77-61 on Feb. 16, 2010. The Golden Eagles claimed the two teams’ last meeting, 76-65, at the Al McGuire Center on Jan. 26, 2011.
