Marquette to Play St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Sunday
Jan. 13, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team will look for its third straight BIG EAST Conference win Sunday, Jan. 15 when it takes on St. John's at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is set for 1:15 p.m. CT.
Following its brief trip to the Empire State, Marquette will return home to host Georgetown on Tuesday, Jan. 17 live on CBS Sports Network and Providence on Saturday, Jan. 21.
The Golden Eagles have won their last two BIG EAST contests over Seton Hall (69-60) and Villanova (51-50) at the Al McGuire Center. Katherine Plouffe has led the Golden Eagles in their last two games posting 20 points against Seton Hall and her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds against the Wildcats. Plouffe may have paced the team in scoring and rebounding against Villanova, but it was Katie Young's 3-pointer from well behind the arc as time expired that proved to be the difference maker in the one-point victory.
St. John's enters the game with Marquette on a four-game win streaking that includes conference wins over Providence (57-41), Louisville (72-64) and at Syracuse (70-58). With 14.5 points per game, Eugeneia McPherson leads a trio averaging over 10 points per game. Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith follow with 12.6 and 11.9 points per game, respectively.
Marquette is 6-2 all-time against St. John's, 2-2 when playing the Red Storm in the Empire State. Marquette claimed the last win, 55-52, at the Al McGuire Center on Feb. 1, 2011. Tatiyiana McMorris drained the game-winning 3-pointer with 3.6 seconds left on the clock to earn the win. McMorris finished with a game-high 19 points. The Golden Eagles dropped the last meeting at Carnesecca Arena, 71-58, on Jan. 5, 2010. The two teams have never met at Madison Square Garden.
