Women's Basketball to Host Villanova Friday
Jan. 29, 2015
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team (4-16, 0-9 BIG EAST) will look to pick up its first BIG EAST win of the season when it hosts both Villanova and Georgetown this weekend. Tipoff against the Wildcats is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central time on Friday, while MU will face the Hoyas at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Villanova (12-9, 6-3 BIG EAST) sits in fourth place in the BIG EAST after suffering a three-point loss to league-leading Seton Hall last Friday and defeating St. Johns on Sunday by a score of 81-69. The Wildcats' defense has been integral to their success this season, as their 55.9 points allowed per game ranks second in the conference and 26th in the nation.
Senior Emily Leer has only appeared in 13 games for Villanova this season, but she is averaging team highs in both points per game (12.8) and field goal percentage (51.6). Junior Caroline Coyer has been a staple of the Wildcats' offense all year, as she ranks second on the team with 12.2 points per game and is one of two players (Lauren Burford is the other) to start every game this season. Additionally, Coyer's 44.9 three-point field goal percentage in BIG EAST play ranks third in the league, while her twin sister, junior Katherine Coyer, is second with a 47.1 rate from deep.
The Golden Eagles led at halftime of both of their games last weekend, but was unable to put their opponents away down the stretch. Senior Arlesia Morse scored 19 and 21 points in the pair of games, leading the team on both occasions. She also went a perfect 15-15 from the charity stripe in Sunday's game against Creighton, which was both a career high and the most made free throws by a Marquette player this year. She leads the BIG EAST in free throw percentage with 91.5 percent (86 for 94).
Marquette holds an 8-6 lead in the all-time series against Villanova. The Wildcats won 68-48 when the two teams met in Pennsylvania earlier this season, while the Golden Eagles last defeated Villanova 56-53 in the first round of the 2014 BIG EAST Championship.
Following Friday's contest, the Golden Eagles will host Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. That game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
