Women's Basketball Travels to Xavier Friday
Feb. 5, 2015
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team (5-17, 1-10 BIG EAST) will hit the road for the first time in three weeks when it travels to Xavier (13-9, 5-6 BIG EAST) for a game at 6 p.m. Central time on Friday, Feb. 6. On their way back to Milwaukee, the Golden Eagles will stop at Butler to face the Bulldogs at noon on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Marquette went 1-1 last weekend and picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season, and the first of head coach Carolyn Kieger's career, on Sunday when it defeated Georgetown 80-73 at the Al McGuire Center. Senior Arlesia Morse poured in a career-high 30 points and set program records with 17 free throw attempts and 17 made free throws. The conference awarded her with a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod for her efforts.
Xavier is also coming off a 1-1 weekend, as the Musketeers fell to Creighton last Friday, but defeated Providence on Sunday. Xavier touts an extremely balanced offensive attack, as junior Briana Glover leads the team in scoring with only 11.1 points per game. Redshirt sophomore Raeshaun Gaffney and senior Maleeka Kynard follow with 10.3 and 8.6 points per game, respectively.
The Musketeers' biggest strength is their defense. Xavier ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring defense (62.6 points allowed per game), three-point field goal percent defense (30.0 percent allowed), rebounding defense (37.2 allowed per game), and steals (8.7 per game).
Marquette has a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series with Xavier, as the Golden Eagles won both matchups last season. However, the Musketeers claimed a 74-71 decision when the two teams met at the Al McGuire Center earlier this season.
Following its matchup with Xavier, Marquette will face a Butler team currently ranked third in the conference. That game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network via the FOX Sports Go app.
