Marquette to Face No. RV/22 DePaul Sunday
Feb. 10, 2012
MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women's basketball team returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 12 when it travels to Chicago, Ill., to take on No. RV/22 DePaul at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Action is set for 1:30 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPN2 with Beth Mowins (play-by-play) and Brooke Weisbrod (analyst) on the call.
The Marquette-DePaul broadcast is part of ESPN’s support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Play 4 Kay" initiative to help raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Over 1,000 schools nationwide will assist in this effort Feb. 10-20.
Play 4 Kay, formerly known as the Pink Zone, is in honor of the late Kay Yow, former NC State University head women's basketball coach. She served as the catalyst for Play 4 Kay after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009.
The Golden Eagles (13-10, 4-6 BIG EAST) snapped their four-game losing streak on Feb. 4, beating Pittsburgh, 72-48, during their seventh annual Pink Out game at the Al McGuire Center. Freshman gad Arlesia Morse scored a career-high 24 points to lead the way for MU, while Katherine Plouffe tallied 19 points and career-best 15 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
All the proceeds raised from the Pink Out game went towards the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program.
DePaul (18-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) enters Sunday's contest having won three of its last four games, which includes its most recent 79-73 victory over Villanova on Feb. 8. Anna Martin leads the high-powered DePaul offense, which ranks third in the BIG EAST (74.6 points per game) with 18.4 points per game, and junior forward Katherine Harry is nearly averaging a double-double with 9.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Blue Demons are 11-1 at home this season with their only defeat coming back on Jan. 21, losing to then No. 3/3 UConn, 88-44.
This will be the 55th time the two schools have met, with DePaul holding the series advantage, 33-21. MU snapped a six-game losing streak to the Blue Demons last season when Angel Robinson sank a pair of free throws with 26 seconds remaining to put Marquette up 60-53, eventually allowing the Golden Eagles to hold on and pull off the upset over No. 7/11 DePaul at the Al McGuire Center.
Head coach Terri Mitchell and DePaul head coach Doug Bruno have met 31 times since 1996 with Bruno holding the slight edge, 18-13.
