Marquette Heads to Providence for Showdown with the Friars

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women's basketball team will play its first of two final conference road matches on Tuesday, Feb. 25, taking on Providence at 6 p.m. Central time.
The Golden Eagles (12-14, 4-9 BIG EAST) are coming off a tough 67-61 home loss to St. Johns on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Senior forward Sarina Simmons made program history when she scored her 1,000-point in Wednesday's game. She is now the 22nd player in Marquette history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
Three players, including Simmons who notched 16 points, earned double figures against the Red Storm. Junior Arlesia Morse led the Golden Eagles in scoring with a total of 18 points, scoring 13 of her 18 in the second half.
Providence (7-19, 2-11 BIG EAST) enters the game against Marquette on a four-game losing streak. The Friars dropped a 64-45 loss to Cincinnati (Feb. 23) their last time out. Senior Symone Roberts, who added 10 points in the contest, score her 1,000-point against the Bearcats, becoming the 31st player in the Friars program to reach that mark.
Roberts ranks No. 11 in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging just over 14.2 points per game. The senior guard is in the top-10 for five statistical categories including, assists (4.6), free throw percentage (77.6 percent), steals (3.3), assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0), and minutes played (36.5).
Marquette holds a 4-3 advantage in the series in meetings with Providence. In their last matchup on Jan. 21, 2012, at the Al McGuire Center, the Golden Eagles fell to the Friars in the final seconds of the game, 52-50. The then-senior Rachel Barnes made two clutch free throws for Providence with 0.1 seconds left to beat Marquette by a bucket.
Tuesday's game will be Providence's annual Think Pink event to raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. All proceeds from donations and Think Pink t-shirt sales will support the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Center.
Marquette will meet Georgetown on March 2 in Washington, D.C., before rounding out BIG EAST Conference play at the Al McGuire Center against Cincinnati on March 4.
