Blockton Named BIG EAST WBB Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Feb. 27, 2018

NEW YORK – Marquette University women’s basketball junior guard Allazia Blockton has been selected as BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Presented by Sunkist. The selection was made by the Conference’s Academic Affairs Committee.

Blockton will receive a $2,000 scholarship that may be applied to graduate or professional studies. She becomes just the second Marquette player to be recognized with the honor after Katherine Plouffe earned the distinction in 2014.

The Milwaukee, Wis. native owns a 3.633 cumulative grade point average while pursuing an undergraduate degree in advertising. She earned BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors in each of her first two seasons as a Golden Eagle and is on pace for a third in 2017-18.

“We are all extremely proud of what Allazia has accomplished both on and off the floor, “head coach Carolyn Kieger said. “She is a very driven student-athlete who excels in her studies and invests in our community. She has been a leader by example in many areas. This award is well-deserved, and we are proud that she continues to impact Marquette in numerous ways.”

Blockton is the league representative on the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which aims to enhance the total student-athlete experience by protecting student-athlete well-being, fostering a positive student-athlete image and inclusive student-athlete environment, and promoting student-athlete engagement at the national, conference and local levels. She is also an active participant in her hometown of Milwaukee through events such as Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

On the court, Blockton was voted BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year prior to the 2017-18 season. She became the first MU player to finish as the league’s top scorer with 19.2 points per contest and helped lead the Golden Eagles (21-8, 15-3) to a share of their first BIG EAST regular-season title. Due to tie-breaking procedures, Marquette claims the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time in program history. The Golden begin their tournament title defense against the winner of No. 8 Butler/No. 9 Providence on Sunday, March 4 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. That game will air live on FS2.

The BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2017-18 academic year. In addition, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 10-member institutions) will receive postgraduate scholarships as the winners of their respective institutions’ Scholar-Athlete Award. The winners of the institutional awards are then eligible for the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
