Plouffe Named BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete
March 5, 2014
NEW YORK, N.Y.--Marquette University senior Katherine Plouffe has been selected as the 2013-14 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced on Wednesday during the release of the all-conference teams. In addition to the major award, Plouffe was also a unanimous selection for first team all-conference.
The Edmonton, Alberta native has a 3.4 grade-point-average and will graduate in May with a degree in communication studies. Plouffe was selected to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 6 squad this season, which marked the first time an MU women's basketball player has earned that honor since 2000. She has been a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the past two seasons and been a Dean's List member since 2011. This is the first time a Marquette women's basketball player has earned a conference scholar-athlete award since Nicki Taggart was given C-USA's top award in 1998.
Plouffe's All-BIG EAST First Team honor follows a successful senior campaign as MU's leader on and off the court. She has been in the top three in the BIG EAST this season in scoring and rebounding, has recorded 11 double-doubles and tallied 30+ points twice this season. She finished the regular season ranked second in the BIG EAST in scoring with 17.6 points per contest and was third in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds. Plouffe is the league's active leading scorer and rebounder with 1,495 points and 911 career boards.
Marquette has earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship and will face No. 4 seed Villanova for the second time in less than a week. Tip-off is set for Sunday, March 9 at 8:30 p.m. Central time at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.
