Golden Eagles Raise $6,000 in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness
March 11, 2010
MILWAUKEE - For the fifth consecutive season, the Marquette women's basketball hosted a successful "Pink Out" on Saturday, Feb. 20 in conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone initiative in support of breast cancer awareness. Through various donations including a 3-point Attack Against Cancer, pink t-shirt sales and Chuck-A-Duck, the Golden Eagles raised $6,000. The money raised was split between the Milwaukee Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness Program (MBCCAP) and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. For its regionally televised (BIG EAST Network) game against DePaul, Marquette players wore pink Nike uniforms and the staff was also sporting pink shirts. All fans who attended the game were encouraged to wear pink. Pink Marquette women's basketball t-shirts were $10 with all proceeds going to the MBCCAP and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Marquette's 3-Point Attack Against Cancer, where fans could pledge a certain dollar amount per 3-pointer made or give a flat donation, was arguably the highlight of the day. Courtney Weibel, Tatiyiana McMorris, Angel Robinson and Lauren Thomas-Johnson combined to knock down six 3-pointers for the game. Along with the monetary donations, five individuals donated at least eight inches of their hair to the Beautiful Lengths Campaign in which the hair donated went directly to wigs for cancer patients. "The cut" was made during halftime before 2,191 fans in attendance. Other activities surrounding the game included a health fair and a bra drive in which over 190 gently used or new bras were donated to the Sexual Assualt Treatment Center of Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles also recognized breast cancer survivors in a pre-game ceremony. Stay tuned for information regarding next season's "Pink Out."
