March 17, 2014
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team has earned an at-large bid in Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), announced Monday night by WNIT officials. The Golden Eagles will travel to Indiana State on Thursday, March 20. Tip-off will be set at a later time.
The selection into the 64-team field marks the 18th post-season appearance in program history for the Golden Eagles, who compiled a 21-10 overall record this season and went 11-7 in BIG EAST action. MU advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament this season before falling to DePaul. It is the 10th 20+ win season for the Golden Eagles and the 15th post-season appearance since head coach Terri Mitchell began her tenure at Marquette in 1996.
The selection into the WNIT field is the programs ninth all-time and the second in as many seasons. The Golden Eagles are 13-8 all-time in WNIT/NWIT play. Marquette fell to Northern Iowa in the first round last year, 61-59.
Indiana State enters the WNIT with a 20-10 overall record and went 14-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores were the No. 1 seed in their conference tournament but fell in the semifinals, which gave them the WNIT automatic bid. It is the second consecutive postseason appearance for Indiana State. And MU owns a 2-1 record in the all-time series.
The winner of the game will face the winner of Indiana/Belmont. Additional game information will be available tomorrow.
