Marquette Set to Host Northern Iowa to Open WNIT
March 20, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette Women's basketball team is set to host the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Friday, March 22 at the Al McGuire Center, and will square off against the University of Northern Iowa (16-16). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on gomarquette.com
Despite losing its final contest to DePaul 77-69 in the second round of the BIG EAST Conference tournament, Marquette (16-15, 7-9) was able to reach the NIT by winning four of its last five games, including a 66-43 victory against Pittsburgh in the first round of conference tournament play. That 66-43 win solidified MU an NIT at-large qualifying mark of having a .500 record or better. The Golden Eagles are 13-7 all-time in WNIT/NWIT action and are appearing in the tournament for the first time since 2010.
Marquette has been led by senior Katherine Plouffe, who over the last five games, has averaged nearly a double-double with 12.2 points and 9 rebounds, including a 20-point, 14-rebound performance at Providence on Feb. 26.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams with Northern Iowa leading the all-time series 3-2. The last time the two teams met was in 2000 when Marquette fell to UNI 69-62 in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic.
The winner will face the winner of the Minnesots/Ball State matchup being played on Friday evening, also at 7 p.m. at Monnesota.
