MU Announces Addition of OSU Transfer Tori McCoy

May 17, 2017

MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University women’s basketball program has added Ohio State transfer Tori McCoy, head coach Carolyn Kieger announced on Wednesday afternoon.

McCoy is a 6-4 forward from Champaign, Illinois and will arrive on campus this summer. After sitting out one season due to NCAA transfer rules she will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

“We are thrilled to welcome Tori to our Marquette family,” Kieger said. “She is a tremendously gifted player who has the ability to affect the game on both ends of the floor. She has proven herself as an elite player both in high school and during her freshman season.”

McCoy arrives in Milwaukee after a successful campaign at Ohio State where she averaged 8.1 points per game, while shooting 62.9 percent from the floor and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. She grabbed 4.9 rebounds per game and totaled a team-high 59 blocks. McCoy played in all 35 games for the Buckeyes and earned 10 starts, helping OSU to an appearance in the Sweet 16. She tied a single-game record for Ohio State shooting 10-for-10 from the floor on Dec. 7 and set a Big Ten Tournament record, blocking seven shots in a semifinal game against Purdue.

The consensus five-star recruit was a McDonald’s All-American, a Naismith Player of the Year Finalist and a WBCA All-American. She averaged 20.7 points, grabbed 8.7 rebounds and shot just under 70 percent in her senior year at Saint Thomas More High School. McCoy played in the Annual Jordan Brand Classic and was a top-10 prospect in the 2016 class by every media outlet. She joins MU as one of the highest-ranked recruits in program history and the first McDonald’s All-American on the roster.

“As successful as Tori has been in her young career, we believe her best basketball is ahead of her. She will immediately help elevate our program to another level and is an amazing fit for our style of play,” Kieger said. “Her versatility and athleticism allow her to be a dynamic scoring threat on offense and a lethal shot blocker on defense. We are excited to help Tori develop on and off the floor and we look forward to seeing her in Blue and Gold.”

Marquette returns 11 players from last season’s squad that compiled a 25-8 record and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. McCoy will join freshmen newcomers Selena Lott and Myriama Smith Traore, also arriving on campus this summer.
