Marquette Announces 2013-14 Non-Conference Schedule

Head coach Terri Mitchell will begin her 18th season

June 10, 2013

MILWAUKEE - Head coach Terri Mitchell has announced the non-conference schedule for the 2013-14 Marquette University women's basketball team. The Golden Eagles will play seven home games, including a contest against Duke, which reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Championship last season.

"We are extremely excited about the schedule we have put together because we think it is a great blend of the national competition that we are looking for in our program," said Mitchell. "We want to play a national schedule, so we have ACC opponents Duke and Wake Forest at home and we will face Vanderbilt on the road, and Utah on a neutral court. Our fans are going to be extremely pleased with our non-conference schedule. We already know the BIG EAST schedule we have is going to be fantastic and the nine teams that we will see at home will be great competition."

Marquette will open the 2013-14 season on Saturday, Nov. 9, as it welcomes Wake Forest to the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround and host Arkansas Pine Bluff on Monday, Nov. 11.

MU will play its first road game on Sunday, Nov. 17 as it travels to Nashville, Tenn., to face SEC opponent Vanderbilt. The Commodores were an NCAA tournament squad a year ago and advanced to the second round before falling to eventual national champion, Connecticut.

The Golden Eagles will welcome Central Michigan on Thursday, Nov. 21 before facing Duke at the Al on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Marquette will be on the road again for the Thanksgiving holiday and will play a tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 29-30. Senior forward Katherine Plouffe will match up against her twin sister, Michelle, a forward for Utah, while the Golden Eagles will also face Tennessee Tech.

The Golden Eagles will play two in-state opponents to open December action, hosting Wisconsin on Wednesday, Dec. 4 before renewing a series with crosstown-foe Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center on Sunday, Dec. 15.

The non-conference portion of MU's schedule will conclude with home games against Oral Roberts (Dec. 18) and the University of Denver on Dec. 20.

The Golden Eagles non-conference schedule features four NCAA tournament teams and a Utah squad that reached the championship of the WNIT last season.

"In every way our schedule reflects the great competition that Marquette fans are used to and we are extremely excited about what the slate has to offer," Mitchell said. "My philosophy in non-conference scheduling is to prepare the team for the conference schedule ahead. St. John's, DePaul and Villanova all advanced to the NCAA tournament last season, so in order to prepare for those teams we will play a fantastic non-conference schedule."
