TORONTO--Former Marquette University women’s basketball standout Katherine Plouffe won a gold medal with Canada in the Pan American Games Monday evening.

Plouffe played 13 minutes for the squad in the final game against the United States in an 81-73 victory, which gave the Canadian women’s basketball team its first-ever gold medal in the Pan Am Games. She notched two points and two rebounds.

The Canadians totaled five wins in five nights over Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba, Brazil, and finally the United States. The title game was played the final in front of a sell-out crowd of 3,300 hometown fans at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Canada will play in next month's qualifying tournament for a spot in Rio’s 2016 Olympic Games, and will face virtually the same teams. Canada has to win the tournament to earn an automatic berth, but will not face the United States as the Americans have already booked their spot in Rio.
