MU Announces Non-Conference Schedule
Aug. 4, 2016
MILWAUKEE- Marquette University women's basketball head coach Carolyn Kieger has announced the non-conference portion of her team's 2016-17 schedule, with seven of the eleven non-league contests being held at the Al McGuire Center.
Multiple home games is welcome news for Coach Kieger, as last season's squad, from which all five starters will return, compiled a .692 winning percentage at the friendly confines of the Al McGuire Center.
"Our entire program is looking forward to our non-conference schedule," Kieger stated. "We will be challenged and tested early to prepare us for BIG EAST play, and are excited to start the year with three home games as well as playing two top-25 teams in Arizona State and Oregon State. Playing two Pac-12 schools who received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament will present us with great opportunities to perform on a national stage. In addition, with seven home games on our schedule, we are hoping to gain excitement from ours fans as we look forward to hosting the BIG EAST Tournament in March."
The Golden Eagles will host Minnesota State University at the Al for an exhibition match-up on Sunday, Nov. 6, before officially opening the season with a home battle against Longwood on Nov. 11. The game with the Lancers will be the first of three home contests in the month of November.
After the battle with Longwood, Marquette will host St. Francis and Arizona State, on Tuesday Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 19, respectively. The Golden Eagles will then embark on their first road trip on the season, as the squad will head to Corvallis, Oregon, to take on expected top-25 program, Oregon State on Tuesday, Nov. 22. This will mark the second leg of a home-and-home series with OSU, with the then No. 7 ranked Beavers stealing last year's game, 65-58.
Marquette will once again participate in a Thanksgiving weekend tournament, this time heading to Stockton, California to take on the likes of Santa Clara (Nov. 25) and Pacific (Nov. 26). As the calendar flips to December, the Golden Eagles will then return to the Al for a pair contests beginning with Western Illinois, on Friday, Dec. 2, and closing with Green Bay on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
The Golden Eagles' annual showdown with in-state foe Wisconsin is set for Sunday Dec. 11 in Madison, as MU looks to capture back-to-back victories against the Badgers, after toppling UW, 77-61, at the Al last season behind a 17-point effort from BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Allazia Blockton.
The Blue and Gold will complete their non-conference slate with a pair of home games, as crosstown foe Milwaukee and New Mexico will come to the Al, on Dec. 18, and Dec. 21, respectively. The Dec. 21 match-up with the Lobos will mark Marquette's annual MPS day celebration and tip-off at 11:30 a.m. Central time.
BIG EAST play is expected to begin the week of Dec. 26.
