MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team will get its first chance to play together under head coach Carolyn Kieger when the team embarks on a six-city European tour from Aug. 10-20.

"This foreign tour is going to be a wonderful opportunity for the new staff and players to bond before the school year gets started," Kieger said. "I still remember my foreign trip when I was a student-athlete here and I could not be more excited for our current players to make their own memories and bonds with their teammates."

Marquette held its first practice Aug. 1, since NCAA rules allow teams to travel abroad once every four years and hold 10 practices leading up to their trip. But this tour is not solely about basketball, as the team's itinerary is filled with both basketball-related and cultural sightseeing opportunities, including a tour of Holy Rome with a visit to the Vatican.

"We have an amazing chance to play against some competitive teams, while also being exposed to new cultures and historical landmarks," Kieger said. "I am so fortunate to work at an institution where the administration recognizes and supports the importance of student-athletes growing as players and individuals through this type of experience and our entire team is grateful for all of the generous support we have received."

After arriving in Paris on Aug. 11, Marquette will take on AMW Team France at 7 p.m. local time (noon CST) on Aug. 12. Then, the team will have two days off to experience Nice, Monaco and Como before taking a boat to Florence on Aug. 15. The Golden Eagles will then play a pair of games against the Netherlands National Team on Aug. 15 (noon CST) and Aug. 16 (11:30 a.m. CST).

The team will spend the last three days of the trip in Rome and play its final game against the Netherlands National Team at 11:30 a.m. CST on Aug. 19.
