NEW YORK-- The BIG EAST Conference has released the 2017-18 women's basketball schedule and the reigning BIG EAST Champion Marquette women's basketball team opens league play at the Al McGuire Center on Thursday, Dec. 28 against St. John's.
Marquette will play on national television a total of five times, including the lidlifter against the Red Storm on FS2. The Golden Eagles game at Creighton on Sunday, Jan. 7 will air on FS2, while the Sunday, Jan. 21 matchup at Villanova will be shown on FS1. It will be a conference tournament championship rematch on Monday, Jan. 29 when MU travels to DePaul for an 8 p.m. CT tilt on FS1, while Marquette's game at Xavier on Friday, Feb. 9 is also slated to air on FS2. All remaining BIG EAST Conference games will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network, via FOX Sports GO, for the third straight year, for a total of 74 league games covered by the digital platform. The BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will air on FS1 and FS2 March 3-6.
"We are thrilled for the opportunity to play on national television five times during conference play," head coach Carolyn Kieger said. "Playing on a national stage will be great exposure for our program and the BIG EAST."
Marquette opens the league slate with three consecutive home games. After hosting the Red Storm on Dec. 28, the Golden Eagles welcome Seton Hall on Saturday, Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. as part of a double header with the Marquette men's basketball team. MU welcomes DePaul back to the Al McGuire center in a rare Thursday night contest Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. CT.
The Golden Eagles knock out the longest BIG EAST trip of the season starting at Creighton on Jan. 7 before heading east to Providence on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The league schedule will then resume the standard Friday/Sunday play as MU hosts Butler and Xavier, Jan. 12 and 14, respectively, before traveling for the next three contests. The Golden Eagles are at Georgetown (Jan. 19) and Villanova (Jan. 21) before playing league travel partner DePaul on Monday, Jan. 29.
Providence and Creighton head to the Al on Feb. 2 and Feb. 4, respectively, followed by a trip to Xavier (Feb. 9) and Butler (Feb. 11). The final home games of the season will take place on Friday, Feb. 16 when the Golden Eagles welcome Villanova, while senior day is set for Sunday, Feb. 18 against the Hoyas. Marquette will celebrate lone senior Shantelle Valentine at that contest.
The Golden Eagles wrap up regular season play at Seton Hall (Feb. 23) and St. John's (Feb. 25) before preparing for the BIG EAST Tournament.
"We are excited for the season to get underway and begin preparing to compete against our fellow BIG EAST members," Kieger said. "We feel confident that our non-conference schedule will prepare us for league play, but we also know every game will be a challenge."
