Golden Eagles Host St. Francis (PA) in Season Lidlifter

The Marquette women's basketball team will open the 2009-10 season against St. Francis (Pa) at the Al McGuire Center on Saturday, Nov. 14. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. A live audio stream will be provided by WMUR. The Golden Eagles return three starters and 10 letterwinners from a season ago that finished 17-16 overall and in ninth place with a 7-9 league record. All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection junior Angel Robinson returns for her junior season as well as BIG EAST All-Freshman team honoree sophomore Jessica Pachko. Milwaukee native, freshman Sarina Simmons (Milwaukee King) is Marquette's lone newcomer to the team. The Golden Eagles topped the 100-point mark in both of their exhibition games defeating UW-Stout, 118-71, and Beloit, 102-30. Marquette is 10-3 in season openers under Mitchell and has won the last six straight. This will be the second meeting between the Golden Eagles and Red Flash. The two teams met in 2002 with Red Flash earning a 64-62 win over the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee. The Red Flash return seven of its top scorers from last season led by junior guard Samantha Leach (12.7 ppg) and senior guard Britney Hodges (12.3 ppg). Junior guard Allison Daly and sophomore guard Brittany Lilley also averaged double-digit points scoring 11.5 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. St. Francis finished last season 15-17 overall and 11-7 in the Northeast Conference. In its lone exhibition game of the season, the Red Flash posted a 106-59 win over Slippery Rock.
