Dec. 17, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team (7-2) returns home for a two-game homestand before a holiday break and will host Oral Roberts of Tulsa, Okla., in a matinee game on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at noon. The game will be played in front of thousands of Milwaukee Public School children for the annual MPS day at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles of Marquette are coming off a 71-52 victory over UW-Milwaukee. Junior Apiew Ojulu led the team with 18 points, one of four MU players reaching double digit scoring figures. Fellow junior Christina Bigica tabbed her career-best 15 points and added seven assists alongside redshirt freshman Ashley Santos' career-high 12 points.
MU dominated the boards 54-36 over the Panthers with seniors Katherine Plouffe and Katie Young grabbing 15 and 12 rebounds, respectively. The Golden Eagles held the Panthers to a 27.3 percent shooting percentage from the field.
The Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts (1-7) are making their way up from the Chicago area for Wednesday's matchup after playing at Northwestern University on Monday. Oral Roberts fell 84-54 in an afternoon tilt in Chicago and have lost seven straight contests.
Senior Christian Key is the leading scorer for Oral Roberts, averaging 10.6 points per game.
Wednesday's match up at the Al McGuire Center will be packed with students for MPS day. In last season's MPS day, the students filled the stands with cheers and signs in support for the MU players. Each school was sent activity books to complete beforehand with trivia questions, nutrition info and geography questions. There were over three thousand children in attendance last winter, with this year's expected attendance to be about the same.
The last time Marquette and Oral Roberts met was on Nov. 15, 2008 in the 2008-09 season opener. MU defeated ORU, 89-67. The MU Golden Eagles raised their 2008 WNIT Championship banner during this game.
Marquette returns to the court for the second of its two-game home stand on Friday, Dec. 20 against Denver. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT at the Al McGuire Center.
