Marquette Caps Non-Conference Slate at Toledo Saturday

The Golden Eagles (8-5) are eager to return to the hardwood following a 10-day break for the Christmas holiday. Marquette enters the game with the Rockets on a season-long three-game win streak as MU topped Iona (93-44), South Dakota State (59-51) and Vermont (71-60) in its last three outings. During its win streak, Marquette has averaged 74.3 points per game and has shot 49.1 percent from the floor.

Sophomore Katherine Plouffe continues to be a steady and consistent force for Marquette averaging a double-double with 19.0 points and 10.3 rebounds in MU’s last three wins. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday following her performance in wins over South Dakota State (20 points, 8 rebounds) and Vermont (17 points and 12 rebounds). Through 13 games, Plouffe ranks third in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, knocking down 58.6 percent of her attempts from the floor.

Toledo (7-4), the reigning WNIT Champion, returns nine letter winners from the 2010-11 squad. The Rockets enter the game with Marquette on the heels of a decisive 75-56 win over Northwestern on Dec. 27. The Rockets had four players score in double figures led by Yolanda Richardson, with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Andola Dortch leads Toledo with 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Saturday’s game will mark the fourth meeting between the Rockets and the Golden Eagles, with MU owning a perfect 3-0 mark. Marquette rolled to a 67-28 win over Toledo in the two teams’ last meeting last season on Nov. 24, 2004. The Golden Eagles topped the Rockets, 65-54, in the first round of the 2003 WNIT and earned a 66-58 win early in the 2003-04 season.
