MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell just short in a bid to upset its first top-20 opponent as No. 18 Louisville outlasted the Golden Eagles, 13-12, in the season and home opener inside the new Valley Fields Dome on Friday.

The Golden Eagles (0-1) scored the game's first three goals, but the battle-tested Cardinals (2-0), out of the ACC, withstood the early deficit and stormed back for the one-goal win.

Louisville's Meghan Siverson matched her teammate McKayla Contie with a game-high five goals, scoring the go-ahead goal and subsequent score to break an 11-11 tie with under 4 minutes remaining to prove the difference in the contest.

Sophomore Grace Gabriel led MU with four goals and an assist on a team-high 10 shots, while Allison Lane added a hat trick with five ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls.

Lane's goal with 1:30 remaining pulled MU to within a goal, but Louisville won the ensuing draw and was able to maintain possession through the final horn.

Despite the loss, Marquette looked unfazed against the nationally-ranked Cardinals, outshooting them 36-20, including a 23-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Eagles also held the edge in draw controls (14-13), ground balls (27-17), and fewest turnovers (18-17).

Another tough test awaits the Blue & Gold as they get ready to face No. 8 Notre Dame on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 14. First draw is set for 6 p.m. Central time.
