NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team traveled to No. 10 Notre Dame for its first road game of the season and fell to the Irish, 21-9, inside the Loftus Sports Center on Tuesday.
The Irish (3-1) used a 10-2 first-half run to erase a 2-1 deficit on the way to a 12-6 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles (0-2) dropped their second straight game to a nationally-ranked opponent to open the season after a narrow 13-12 setback to No. 18 Louisville in the opener.
Trailing 1-0 early on, Julianna Shearer scored back-to-back goals in a span of 25 seconds to give Marquette its only lead of the contest at 2-1 with 26:16 left in the half. Shearer would finish the game with four goals, giving her five on the season, while adding five draw controls.
Grace Gabriel tied the school record with eight draw controls, to go along with a goal and a ground ball. Cate Soccodato added two goals, while Riley Hill, and Allison Lane also found the back of the net.
Notre Dame responded to the two quick goals from Shearer with a 10-2 run that spanned over 16 minutes and staked the Irish a 11-4 advantage. ND would take a 12-6 lead into halftime.
The Irish were led by Nikki Ortega and Samantha Lynch, who tallied four goals apiece. Ortega added three assists for a seven-point evening. Casey Pearsall added three goals, while four others chipped in two goals each.
