Women's Lacrosse Falls to Johns Hopkins 16-2

BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins scored the final 12 goals of the afternoon as the Marquette University women’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener 16-2 at historic Homewood Field in Baltimore.
Local freshmen Amanda Bochniak (Fallston, Md.) and Julianna Shearer (Westminster, Md.) scored the lone goals for the Golden Eagles (0-1) in the first half. MU was outshot 32-11, including a 23-6 deficit in shots on goal. MU goalkeeper Sarah Priem made seven saves in net.
Junior Jen Cook led the Blue Jays (1-0) with seven points on five goals and a pair of assists. Senior Taylor D’Amore added two goals and four assists on the afternoon while Sarah Taylor posted a hat trick.
Bochniak scored her first collegiate goal to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 with 28:23 remaining in the opening frame. After Hopkins responded with four goals over the next 13 minutes, Shearer added MU’s second tally, and the first of her career, on a free position shot at the 15:30 mark.
The Blue Jays went on to score the final six goals of the first half and took a 10-2 edge into the break. JHU held a 17-7 edge in shots in the first and a 10-6 advantage in ground balls. Priem made four of her saves in the opening 30 minutes of play.
JHU scored all six markers in the second half while limiting Marquette to just four shots.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 against No. 4 Northwestern at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill.
