Feb. 25, 2018
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team featured five players with hat tricks and broke the program for goals in a 22-12 win over Stetson inside the Valley Dome on Sunday.
Riley Hill entered the game needing just one point to become the fifth player in program history to reach the 100 career points and ended up tying a career-high with seven points on four goals and four assists to lead the way for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette, which won for the third-straight time and improved to 3-2 on the season, had five players score at least three goals. Grace Gabriel tied her career-high with six points, including a game-high five goals. Megan Menzuber added four goals, while Charlotte McGuire and Allison Lane each chipped in three apiece.
Lane also racked up a game-high six ground balls, while Alex Gambacorta added five to go along with two caused turnovers. In net, Julianna Horning made six saves in 30 minutes of action before giving way to Sophia Leva, who made four stops.
The Golden Eagles matched a record for most first-half goals after taking a 15-7 lead into the locker room. Marquette entered Sunday ranking in the nation’s top-15 in draw controls and dominated the draw once again to the tune of a 22-14 edge. The 22 draw controls fall just two shy of the program-record (24) set earlier this season against Central Michigan.
Marquette opened up three separate 10-goal leads during the contest and led by as many as 14 goals against the Hatters on Sunday. The win runs MU’s home record to a perfect 3-0.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 28, when they take on No. 18 Notre Dame on the road. First draw is set for 4 p.m. Central time. Marquette’s next home game is set for Saturday, March 3, vs. Niagara at noon CT.
