BOULDER, Colo. – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team faced its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the young season, including the third on the road, falling to No. 13/9 Colorado, 20-6, at Kittredge Field on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles (2-4) saw their two-game winning streak come to an end despite two-goal efforts by each Julianna Shearer, Allison Lane and Grace Gabriel. Meanwhile, the upstart Buffaloes (6-0) remained unbeaten on the year after jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first 5 minutes and never looked back.

Shearer scored both of her goals in the opening period, snapping a 7-0 Buffaloes start with her first goal of the afternoon and 13th of the season with 14:15 remaining in the first half. The score pulled her even with Gabriel for the team lead in season goals at the time.

However, Gabriel’s two-goal game would propel her back into the team lead with 15 goals on the season. Both of Lane’s tallies would come in the second half.

Colorado was aggressive from the start, challenging Marquette inside the 8-meter area and converting on 7-of-11 free-position attempts on the afternoon, including three of its first six goals and five total in the first half. The Golden Eagles were just 1-for-4 on free-position attempts.

Turnovers also plagued MU in the opening stanza, committing 13 miscues in the first 20 minutes, but committed just six turnovers in the second half.

CU had five players register multi-goal efforts, including Cali Castagnola and Johnna Fusco who each tallied four goals apiece. CU outshot MU 36-19 in the contest with 28 shots landing on target.

Marquette made a goalie change just 15 minutes into the game when Jules Horning replaced Molly Grozier. Each netminder made three saves on the day.

The Golden Eagles will remain on the road, but closer to her home in their next match-up, facing No. 12/11 Northwestern on Saturday, March 11. First draw is set for 12 p.m. Central time in Evanston, Illinois.
