DAVIS, Calif. - Redshirt junior Emily Donovan led the Marquette University women's lacrosse team to its second straight overtime victory when she broke a 4-4 tie with 2:14 remaining in the extra session to take down UC-Davis on the road this afternoon.

For the second time in a row, the Golden Eagles (2-3) outlasted their opponent in overtime following an 8-7 win at Duquesne last week. Donovan finished with two goals on the day, tying redshirt sophomore Taylor Smith for game-high honors. Junior Claire Costanza assisted on the game-winner and finished the day with a goal and two assists to increase her team lead with 12 points.

Four different Aggies (1-3) found the net. Melissa Kellan tallied her 11th goal of the season and an assist as well to lead UC-Davis, which was coming off a 13-10 win over Detroit last time out.

Marquette jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Smith picked up right where she left off from her four-goal effort in the win over Duquesne last week. Her goal just 1:25 into today's game gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

Costanza got into the act very quickly as well, making it 2-0 just 2:46 into the contest. Donovan's first goal of the game made it 3-0 with 12:23 left in the first half and MU seemed to be cruising to its second straight win.

However, the Aggie defense tightened up and their offense finally broke through. UC-Davis got on the board with a Kelsey DeJesus goal with 9:46 remaining in the opening stanza. Just 1:14 later, Ellie Delich made it a one-goal game, which is where it stood heading into halftime.

Neither team cracked the scoreboard until there was 12:43 left in regulation when Smith tallied her ninth of the season to make it a 4-2 game and give MU some much-needed breathing room.

It was short-lived. Elizabeth Landry took a Kellan pass and cut the deficit back down to a single goal with her score less than a minute after Smith's tally.

Kellan, the team's leading scorer, then tied the game with 9:25 left and both defenses stood up to the task to keep the game that way heading into overtime.

Donovan then sent her team's bench into a frenzy and moved the Golden Eagles to 2-1 in overtime games this season with her score late in the extra session.

MU's offense peppered UC-Davis goalie Kai Murphy with 18 shots on goal. She stopped 13 of them in a phenomenal effort. Meanwhile, Marquette netminder Sarah Priem earned her second straight victory and needed to make just two saves to do so. Her defensive unit in front of her did a solid job of keeping the Aggies away from net, holding them to just six shots on goal.

The unit also forced 25 turnovers, held UC-Davis to a 9-for-16 efficiency in clearances, and a 1-for-3 effort in free position shots. Sophomore Fran Meyer led the way defensively, causing two turnovers and picking up three ground balls. Junior Hayley Baas also recorded two caused turnovers and gathered three ground balls to go along with three shots.

The Golden Eagles look to make it three straight wins as they make the short trip to Moraga to take on St. Mary's College on Tuesday, March 10. The Gaels have allowed nearly 20 goals per contest.

Start time is set for 6 p.m. Central time.
