Women's Lacrosse Falls at St. Mary's, 16-7

MORAGA, Calif. – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team dropped the first contest of its three-game West Coast road trip Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s (Calif.), 16-7.
The Golden Eagles fall to 2-3 with the loss, while the Gaels improve to 2-3 overall.
Kenzie Brown, Hayley Baas and Nicole Gleason each recorded a pair of goals for Marquette. Redshirt freshman Emily Donovan scored the final goal of the afternoon for MU on a feed from Katie Bathon as Bathon notched her first point of the season with an assist.
The Gaels’ leading scorer Amanda Cross scored all four of her goals in the second half, while midfielder Rachel Minarovich potted a pair in each half. Minarovich also recorded a game-high nine draw controls in the victory.
St. Mary’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Brown answered with the first of her two first half goals at the 18:46 mark of the opening stanza. The Gaels would score the next five goals, including four over a span of 1:40 on the game clock, to take an 8-3 lead into the intermission.
Baas scored Marquette's first two goals of the second half after St. Mary’s pushed its lead to 10-3 out of the break. The Golden Eagles were unable to cut their deficit to fewer than five through the remainder of the contest.
St. Mary's held a 33-22 edge in shots and a 16-9 advantage in draw controls, while the Golden Eagles turned the ball over 22 times. Marquette goalie Sarah Priem stopped five of SMC's 13 shots on goal in the first 30 minutes and ended the afternoon with eight saves.
The Golden Eagles will continue their road swing at San Diego State on Thursday before playing at USC on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. CT.
