March 19, 2017
CINCINNATI – All facets were clicking for the Marquette University women’s lacrosse team in a 16-10 road victory over Cincinnati in the BIG EAST opener on Sunday.
Junior Riley Hill led all scorers with a career-high five goals, while senior Amanda Bochniak notched a career-high eight points and a career-best four goals and four assists. Claire Costanza also had a big game with five points on a goal and four assists.
The Golden Eagles (3-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) ended a three-game losing skid and won their second straight BIG EAST Conference opener on the road following a league-opening, 15-4, triumph over Villanova in 2016.
Marquette never trailed, but the Bearcats (3-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) made it interesting at several points. After the Elaina Enich scored one of her team-high four goals to tie the game at 7-7 to start the second half, MU went on a three-goal run in a span of less than 3 minutes as Julianna Shearer, Grace Gabriel and Hill all found the back of the net.
Trailing 11-8, Enich started another run to bring the game to within 11-10, but the Golden Eagles rallied off the final five goals, capped by three-straight from Bochniak, who recently joined the 100-point club.
Shearer’s two goals brings her to within one of tying Hayley Baas’s all-time mark of 88 career goals, and just four points away from joining Bochniak, Baas and Costanza as members of the Marquette 100-point club.
Both teams nearly doubled their combined score totals from the previous two match-ups that saw the Golden Eagles score identical 8-7 victories. MU is now 4-1 all-time against the Bearcats.
Marquette will remain in BIG EAST action and on the road, closing out a seven-game swing away from home with Temple on Saturday, March 25. First draw is set for noon Central time in Philadelphia.
