Shearer Breaks Season Goals Mark in Loss at 13/13 Denver
April 8, 2017
DENVER, Colo. - Marquette senior attacker Julianna Shearer scored four times, breaking her own single-season record and setting the new program standard, but the Golden Eagles were unable to fully recover from a seven-goal barrage out of the gates as host No. 13/13 Denver hung on for an 18-12 BIG EAST Conference win at the Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday.
Shearer scored three consecutive goals to snap a 7-0 Pioneer run midway through the first half. She would add one more in the second half to give her a new career-high and program record 39 goals on the season and 99 for her career.
Turnovers plagued the Golden Eagles (4-9, 2-3 BIG EAST) for much of the first half as they committed 15 miscues before halftime. Shearer got the scoring started for the Blue and Gold and over the final 13-plus minutes, outscored the Pioneers (10-2, 4-1 BIG EAST), 4-1.
At the start of the second half, Marquette would cut the deficit to just two when Amanda Bochniak, Riley Hill and Shearer combined to make it 9-7, Denver with 24:27 remaining. However, the Pioneers would respond with five consecutive scores to stave off a furious MU comeback.
Hill would finish with two goals, while Bochniak added a goal and an assist. Grace Gabriel also tallied a multi-goal game with two scores to go along with a game-high six draw controls.
Denver was led by Elizabeth Behrins, who totaled five goals and two assists on seven shots. Julia Feiss and Audrey Schreck each chipped in four goals apiece while Kendra Lanuza added two goals and two assists for the Pioneers.
Marquette committed just five turnovers in the second half, while Denver had just three. The Pioneers outshot the Golden Eagles 38-31 in the contest, while holding a 20-11 edge in ground balls and a 17-15 advantage in draw controls.
MU goalie Jules Horning made an impressive 13 saves on the day, including seven in the first half that kept the Golden Eagles in contention. Her counterpart, Maddy Stevenson, made four stops on the way to improving her record to 10-2 on the year.
Marquette will stay on the road to take on BIG EAST foe UConn in Storrs, Connecticut on Wednesday, April 12. First draw is slated for 11 a.m. Central time.
