MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team held off Vanderbilt 13-11 on Sunday afternoon, improving to 7-0 at home and remaining unbeaten in BIG EAST Conference play.

The Golden Eagles (9-4, 5-0 BIG EAST) clinched a regular season winning record for the first time in program history with the win as seniors Allison Lane and Charlotte McGuire led the offense with a hat trick apiece. Grace Gabriel added a pair of scores and nine draw controls, while Megan Menzuber, Riley Hill, Cate Soccodato and Logan Dobratz rounded out the scoresheet for MU.

Marquette jumped out to a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of play before the Commodores (8-5, 3-2) answered with five consecutive goals en route to an 8-7 advantage at halftime.

The Golden Eagles keyed in on defense in the second half, holding Vanderbilt scoreless for the first 23-plus minutes of action while using a 5-0 scoring run to go ahead, 12-8. MU goalie Julianna Horning made eight saves, including several key second-half stops to keep the Vandy offense at bay.

The Commodores (8-5, 3-2 BIG EAST) rallied late with three-consecutive goals within 3 minutes of play to make it 12-11 with 4:29 left in regulation.

Lane’s third goal of the second half made it 13-11 with 3:22 left to play. Gabriel then had a chance to take the lead back to three with just under 90 seconds remaining, but her free position stop was saved by Grace Bell, who finished with six saves. The ‘Dores regained possession and called timeout with 1:10 remaining.

Out of the timeout, Horning anticipated a pass over the middle and created the turnover to win back possession for the Golden Eagles, who would run out the clock.

Marquette owned the edge in draw controls (15-10) with 10 coming in the first half. MU also won the advantage in groundballs (23-15) and shots (30-27), while forcing 17 Vandy miscues.

For the first time in history, MU clinched a regular season winning record and a BIG EAST single-season wins mark with their fifth league win. Another program first and a key to Sunday’s win was MU’s two man-down goals. Both came in the second half and both were scored by Lane.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 14 against co-BIG EAST leader and the No. 7-ranked Florida Gators (10-3, 5-0 BIG EAST). First draw in Gainesville is set for 11 a.m. Central time.
