Marquette Drops BIG EAST Tilt to Georgetown at Home
April 15, 2017
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team suffered a disappointing, 19-11, setback to BIG EAST rival Georgetown at Valley Fields on Saturday.
The Hoyas (8-7, 6-1 BIG EAST) used a 4-0 run in the first half to erase a one-goal deficit heading into halftime and two more 4-0 runs in the second half – the first of which built a 12-7 lead that proved insurmountable for the Golden Eagles (4-11, 2-5 BIG EAST).
Despite the loss, seven different MU players found the back of the net, including Julianna Shearer, who notched yet another hat trick. It was the fifth straight time and ninth game this season the senior has scored at least three goals. She entered the contest leading the league with 44 tallies and enters the final two regular season games with a chance to be the first Golden Eagle to reach 50 goals in a season.
Charlotte McGuire and Allison Lane tallied two goals apiece, while Amanda Bochniak added a goal and two assists. Grace Gabriel scored her 36th goal of the season to go along with a game-high 10 draw controls – one off her single-game record.
Georgetown held a 35-27 advantage in shots and a 23-20 edge in ground balls. Marquette came out on top in draw controls, thanks to Gabriel, with an 18-14 advantage. The Hoyas were led by a trio of hat tricks from Francesca Whitehurst, Hannah Seibel and Ryan Morgan. The latter tacked on two assists to lead all scorers with five points. Seibel chipped in four ground balls, four caused turnovers and two draw controls.
MU goalie Jules Horning matched her counterpart Maddy Fisher with seven saves on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles will spend the week preparing for first-year program Butler, which will make the trip to Valley Fields on Saturday, April 22. The contest will mark MU’s annual PanCAN Awareness Game and Senior Night. First draw is set for 5 p.m. Central time.
