"As always, the team does a great job choosing their captains and I think we can achieve new heights again this season with this group that will lead us in 2017,” Black said. “This group of captains has a junior, a fifth-year player and two seniors with almost every position group represented. I think that dynamic will give us a lot of different looks from a leadership perspective."
A junior midfielder from Asbury, N.J., Lane is coming off her best season yet after totaling 33 goals, six assists, 29 ground balls, 45 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. Her success in the middle helped set the tone for Marquette's record-setting seven-win season and a tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings.
Meyer is the lone returning defender to record at least 20 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers for the Golden Eagles in 2016. The senior from Oak Brook, Illinois is poised to lead a backline previously occupied by four-year starters and last season’s captains, Elizabeth Goslee and Kayce Haverstick.
Smith has 28 career goals and appeared in all 51 games for Marquette during her career. The redshirt senior midfielder from Eagan, Minnesota returns for her final season after recording six goals, two assists and 20 ground balls in 2016.
Wilson, a redshirt junior midfielder from Ada, Michigan, has appeared in 22 career games, including 13 last season.
The Golden Eagles open the 2017 season with two of their first three games under the new retrofitted dome over the West turf field at Valley Fields, beginning with the season opener against Louisville on Friday, Feb. 10.
