MU's Soccodato to Represent Team Italy in 2017 FIL World Cup

March 2, 2017

MILWAUKEE – Marquette University sophomore Cate Soccodato has earned a roster spot and will compete for Team Italy during the 2017 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup, which will take place July 12-22 in London, England.

Soccodato, who competed for Team Italy at the 2015 European Championships in the Czech Republic prior to her freshman season at Marquette, battled it out with 40 other hopefuls during winter break before learning she had made the final roster of 18 players.

“I was extremely excited to hear she made the team,” Marquette head coach Meredith Black said. “I was thrilled for her and the hard work she has put in. It will be an amazing experience for her to compete in a world cup and could be a once in a lifetime opportunity that she will remember for the rest of her life.

“As a program, it’s great for us to have someone of that caliber playing against the best players in the world. We’re so very proud of her,” Black added.

The Huntington, New York, native was the youngest player on the Italian roster during the 2015 European Championships, but will serve as one of the veterans on the squad this time around. Her sister, Emma, who is currently a sophomore in high school, has now taken on the role as the youngest player on Team Italy.

“I’m honored that I was chosen,” Soccodato said. “It’ll be really fun to play with my sister and represent Team Italy. It’s going to be fun and exciting to play against the top talent in the world.”

The Soccodato sisters are among six Americans on the squad – all of which have competed or are currently competing for NCAA Division I programs with the exception of Emma, who is still in high school. Both meet the requirements to compete for the Italians through the family’s lineage. Their paternal grandparents are natives of Naples, Italy, while their maternal grandparents are from the northern regions of the country.

Soccodato has made four appearances for Marquette this season, ranking seventh on the team with seven points (4 goals, 3 assists). She and the Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, March 5, taking on No. 13/9 Colorado in Boulder, Colorado at 2 p.m. Central time.
