Marquette to Host Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Weekend
April 9, 2013
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team will spend this week continuing to raise awareness and funds for its fight against pancreatic cancer during its final home games of the season against No. 8 Georgetown and No. 17 Loyola Maryland on April 12 and 14 at Valley Fields.
This weekend's games will culminate a season-long initiative by the team to help fight a disease which has greatly affected the lives of program members' family and friends. The disease has held significance for far too many program members, including head coach Meredith Black, whose former college teammate's mother succumbed to the disease in December of 2010.
"Our program has teamed up with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network over the past year as a way of shedding light on a horrendous disease that has affected many individuals dear to us," head coach Meredith Black said. "It is our hope that our actions will help raise awareness of a formidable foe, the fight against which has been overlooked and underfunded for far too long. The battle with pancreatic cancer cannot be won this weekend, but our efforts to raise funds will help progress towards a victory in the not-so-distant future."
The squad has been active with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network for the past year, raising funds and participating in a candlelight vigil on Sept. 30, 2012 on Marquette's campus.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and one of the most painful and deadly.
Donations will be accepted at the game and on the Marquette women's lacrosse profile for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's FirstGiving page.
All fans who attend the game are asked to wear the color purple to show their support for the fight against pancreatic cancer joining the Golden Eagles, who will don purple during pregame warm-ups.
The Golden Eagles will also be raffling off three gift baskets worth roughly $500 apiece. Raffle tickets can be purchased at both games this weekend and will also be available for purchase outside the Spirit Shop on the first floor of the Alumni Memorial Union on Thursday and Friday. Tickets will be for sale at the AMU on Thursday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Friday.
Raffle tickets are $5 each, $10 for three tickets or $20 for eight. The first basket features a custom Marquette lacrosse tote bag in addition to other Marquette gear, while the second basket features a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, in addition to an iPod and other travel accessories. The final basket is full of $500 worth of gift cards.
