Gabriel, Hill Reel in BIG EAST Weekly Honors
May 1, 2018
NEW YORK – For the fourth time this season, Marquette University junior Grace Gabriel is the BIG EAST Conference Midfielder of the Week, while senior attacker Riley Hill claims honor roll mention accolades, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Gabriel’s huge stat-stuffing effort was key in Marquette’s come-from-behind BIG EAST tournament-clinching victory over UConn in the regular season and home finale on Saturday.
The Lancaster, New York, native totaled two goals and three points to go along with seven ground balls, five draw controls and six caused turnovers. Her total in ground balls and caused turnovers set a career-high and tied single-game Marquette records.
Gabriel finished the regular season with program records in both points (65) and draws (103), while setting career-highs across the board.
Hill’s four-goal, five-point performance willed the Golden Eagles to the postseason. She added her final tally during the team’s game-ending 6-0 run over the final 17:24 that proved the difference in defeating UConn, 15-14, and clinching a BIG EAST tournament berth.
The West Islip, New York, native finished the regular season second on the team with 63 points on 31 goals and 32 assists – all career-highs.
The Golden Eagles travel to Gainesville where they will take top-seeded Florida in a BIG EAST tournament semifinal scheduled for Thursday, May 3 (3 p.m. CT).
