MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team consisting of nearly 60 student-athletes, coaches, staff and friends is preparing for the land of pizza, pasta and the Pope as it embarks on a 10-day Italian tour beginning Monday, June 6.

The Golden Eagles depart the evening of June 6 and arrive in Milan, Italy the following morning. The team will tour five of Italian’s most historic cities, including Verona, Venice, Bologna, Florence and Rome, while playing a pair of exhibition contests during its stay.

Fans can expect frequent updates of the team’s adventures on the team's web page dedicated to its Italian Tour and by following Marquette women’s lacrosse on social media via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Members of the squad will provide a daily blog, including photos and details of their journey.

The once-in-a-lifetime adventure provides an educational and cultural experience for a program that recently finished its fourth-ever season - all under the direction of head coach Meredith Black, who saw her squad produce the most successful season to date in 2016.

After the team lands in Milan, it will trek to Verona and Venice for a two-day stay of city tours that includes the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge.

On Thursday, June 9, the Golden Eagles bus to Bologna – home to the world’s oldest university and famous for its terracotta medieval buildings and graffiti-embellished piazzas. Awaiting them will be a gourmet walking tour and pasta-making demonstration.



The squad then travels to Italy’s Tuscany region for three days that will include guided tours of the capital city of Florence, home to masterpieces of art and architecture that includes Brunelleschi’s elegant Duomo and Giotto’s Bell Tower. The stop will also include Marquette’s two exhibition games against the U-19 English National Team on Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12. Both games will be played in nearby Prato.

Following the team’s stay in Tuscany, it will travel to Rome for the final three days of their journey. The Golden Eagles will visit two of the city’s most extraordinary landmarks in the Colosseum and the Forum. Also, the team will have the opportunity to explore Vatican City and Holy Rome.

Marquette enjoys a farewell dinner on its final night in Rome before returning home to Milwaukee on Thursday, June 16.
