Bielawski wins WSGA Match Play Championship

Former MU golf standout and former assistant coach Michael Bielawski won the 2017 Wisconsin State Golf Association (WSGA) Match Play Championship, which was played The Bog in Saukville last Monday-Thursday (June 26-29).

In the second round of the 168-player event, Bielawski was matched up with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL commentator Tony Romo.  Romo, a resident of Burlington, had to concede to Bielawski five holes into the match due to injury.  In the championship match, Bielawski needed 21 holes to top Brian Murtagh and win the championship.

Rising junior Austin Kendziorski had the best finish among current players, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Bielawski is the third straight current or former Golden Eagle to win the event - Zach Gaugert won in 2016 after graduating from MU the month before, and former All-BIG EAST selection Nick Nelson won in 2015 as a rising senior.

Grill named MLL Defensive Player of the Week

Former McCahill Award Winner B.J. Grill continues to excel in Major League Lacrosse and was honored by the league for the first time with defensive player of the week accolades after leading the Denver Outlaws to a 24-12 win over Atlanta on July 4.

From the MLL release

Grill, 24, led the Outlaws defense in limiting Atlanta to just eight goals after the first quarter. The effort came three days after the Blaze put up 17 goals against the Launch on Saturday. James Pannell, who had a hat trick against the Launch, was held scoreless for the first time in 2017. Grill had two ground balls and one caused turnover in the win. The second-year pro out of Marquette has 47 ground balls in 19 career games.
