Shearer Invited to U.S. National Team Tryout
Aug. 3, 2016
SPARKS, Md. – Marquette University women’s lacrosse senior attacker Julianna Shearer has been selected to participate in a three-day tryout for an opportunity to compete on the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team.
Shearer is among 105 players selected to try out for the 2017 U.S. Women’s National Team. Tryouts will be held from Aug. 5-7 at the national team training center at U.S. Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
Following the three-day tryout approximately 36 players will be selected for the U.S. team, which will train in the lead-up to the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s World Cup in Guildford, England. Ultimately, 18 players will represent the U.S. as the team goes for a third consecutive and eighth overall world title.
“I’m so happy and proud of Jules to have this opportunity to compete at the U.S. National Team tryout,” Marquette head coach Meredith Black said. “She has earned this chance after all the hard work she has put in and the fantastic 2016 season she had for us. We wish her the best of luck."
Shearer had one of the best offensive seasons in program history in 2016 on the way to her first All-BIG EAST selection as she was named to the second team. The Westminster, Maryland native set program records and ranked in the league’s top-five in both goals (36) and draw controls (46) last season.
She scored in all but two games for the Golden Eagles, including 13 multi-goal performances and five games of three goals or more. On 10 occasions, she recorded at least a goal, draw control, caused turnover and ground ball in the same game.
She is the second Marquette player in the last three seasons to earn the opportunity to tryout for the U.S. National Team as recent graduate and former defender Elizabeth Goslee was invited in 2015.
