Marquette Hosts First Home Contest Against Grand Valley State
Sept. 28, 2012
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team will host its lone home contest of the fall campaign on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m., when welcomes Grand Valley State to Valley Fields. The game will take place on the eastern-most field along Canal Street and is free for all to attend.
"We are really excited to play our first home game in program history this weekend," Marquette head coach Meredith Black said. "Having our own fans there will be great, and adds an element of excitement to the game. We want to show everyone what we have been doing for over a year now and set a precedent for Marquette women's lacrosse."
Marquette is coming its first intercollegiate contest last Saturday at Notre Dame. Senior midfielder Katie Bathon notched Marquette's first goal in program history midway through the first period, while freshman midfielder Kenzie Brown netted the second and final goal for MU on the afternoon.
The game against Notre Dame was a stepping stone in the development of the Golden Eagles' program.
"There is a sense of relief now that we played our first game, but we can't let our guard down," Black said. "One of our main goals for this coming week is to work on our attack, we have to take the driver's seat on Saturday and apply the pressure."
Grand Valley State, a member of the NCAA's Division II, wrapped-up its inaugural campaign last spring, posting a 10-7 overall mark on the season.
"We are taking this fall season one game at a time, and I think this Saturday's game will be completely different than last weekend's," Black said. "This game is really important for us, but at the same time, we are excited and ready to finally play at home."
Following the game against Grand Valley State, Marquette will have some time off before returning to action on Oct. 14 in GVSU's round robin tournament.
