Marquette Women's Lacrosse Announces 2018 Schedule
Nov. 2, 2017
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team has released its 2018 regular season schedule, which features 17 games, including nine home games at Valley Fields – the most in program history. The season officially gets underway Feb. 9, at Johns Hopkins.
Entering her sixth season at the helm, head coach Meredith Black has always schedule a challenging non-conference slate and 2018 is no different as the Golden Eagles face three teams who finished in the IWLCA Top-20 poll in 2017, plus defending BIG EAST champion, No. 9 Florida. MU is set to take on No. 13 Northwestern, No. 18 Notre Dame and No. 20 Louisville all on the road.
Marquette season begins with a pair of non-conference tests on the road against Johns Hopkins (Feb. 9) and Louisville (Feb. 11). MU looks to avenge narrow home losses from a season ago when they fell to JHU by two and the Cardinals by only one.
The Golden Eagles then return for the much anticipated home lid lifter at Valley Fields, opening a three-game homestand with Central Michigan (Feb. 16), Kennesaw State (Feb. 18) and Stetson (Feb. 25). MU defeated each of the two former schools each on the road in 2017, while Stetson is a first-time opponent.
Marquette will then alternate home and road for each of the final 12 regular season games, starting with the Fighting Irish on the road. The Golden Eagles are winless in their previous six meetings with Notre Dame.
MU will welcome Niagara to Valley Fields for the first time on March 3 before closing out non-conference play with the fifth all-time meeting against Northwestern on the road.
Marquette will open BIG EAST play at home for the first time since 2015, hosting Cincinnati March 18. The Golden Eagles are victorious in their previous two BIG EAST lid lifters, defeating Villanova, 15-6, back in 2016 and taking down the Bearcats, 16-10, last season.
MU has defeated Villanova in two straight and will open league play on the road in Philadelphia on March 25. After returning home to face Temple (March 31), the Golden Eagles will head to Indianapolis for the first time to face Butler (April 4), which enters its second year in the league.
Marquette then welcomes Vanderbilt (April 7) back to Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles have taken two-straight from the Commodores, including the thrilling 2017 season finale that saw MU prevail, 14-12.
MU travels to Gainesville to meet the perennial national title contending Gators (April 14) before returning home for two of the final three regular season games against Denver (April 18) and UConn (April 28).
The UConn match-up will mark the team’s annual Senior Day and PanCAN Awareness game at Valley Fields as Marquette continues its dedicated service toward finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.
The BIG EAST tournament, which features the top-four teams in the standings at the end of the year, will take place in Gainesville and is scheduled for May 3-5. Marquette aims to qualify for its first league tournament before conference realignment welcomes Old Dominion to the BIG EAST with Cincinnati, Florida, Temple, UConn and Vanderbilt leaving to join the American Athletic Conference.
