Women's Lacrosse Announces 2017 Schedule
Nov. 15, 2016
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team has released its 2017 regular season schedule that features 17 contests, including six home games, with the season and home opener at Valley Fields slated for Feb. 10 against Louisville.
“I think this year’s schedule is very difficult, especially our non-conference schedule, but we expect it to prepare us well for BIG EAST Conference play,” Fifth-year head coach Meredith Black said. “Our league gets a little bit stronger this year with the addition of two more teams, Denver and Butler, but we are happy to see the BIG EAST continue to grow and we like our chances of making it to the conference tournament this year.”
The Golden Eagles set a program record with seven wins and tied for third place in the BIG EAST Conference in 2016. Including the Cardinals, Marquette faced a whopping five ranked teams in 2016 and all return to the schedule in 2017 in the form of reigning BIG EAST champion, Florida (No. 6), in addition to Notre Dame (No. 7), Northwestern (No. 12), Johns Hopkins (No. 16) and aforementioned Louisville (No. 15), which all finished last season among the IWLCA Top-20 ranked teams.
Marquette’s first two home contests, including the season opener against Louisville, will be played inside the newly-constructed dome that was retrofitted over the west field turf at Valley Fields. Following a trip to Notre Dame on Valentine’s Day, the Golden Eagles will return to the dome to take on Johns Hopkins, which makes its first-ever trip to Milwaukee on Feb. 18.
Of Marquette’s 11 games away from home, seven will be played consecutively over the span of a month beginning on Feb. 23 with a road trip to Central Michigan. Following the matchup, Marquette travels to Kennesaw State (Feb. 28) for the first time in program history before making its way to Boulder, Colorado for a rematch with the Buffaloes (March 5), who handed MU a narrow 10-8 setback at Valley Fields a season ago.
The Golden Eagles return to the Midwest to play host to Northwestern on March 11, before heading to California for a week-long trip over MU’s spring break period to take on the Golden Bears on March 16. Last season, MU defeated Cal in the regular season home opener, 15-4.
“It’s huge to get out of the cold a little bit and get a chance to experience new places,” Black said. “In the past, a lot of our players haven’t been west of Milwaukee, so we’ll be able to travel and grow as a team while facing some great competition along the way.”
Marquette will open up its fourth season of BIG EAST competition against Cincinnati on March 19, followed by meeting at Temple (March 25). The Golden Eagles will finally return home for their first two league games at Valley Fields, playing host to Villanova (April 1) in the BIG EAST home opener before welcoming reigning BIG EAST Champion Florida to Milwaukee on April 5.
A date with Denver, one of two programs joining as new league members in 2017, is set for April 8, marking the second year in a row Marquette will face the Pioneers out west. Just four days later, MU will trek east to take on BIG EAST runner-up UConn (April 12)
Following an April 15 match-up against Georgetown at Valley Fields, the Golden Eagles will play host to first-year program Butler at home on April 22, which will also mark the team’s annual PanCan Awareness and Senior Day game.
Marquette will wrap up the regular season in Nashville, Tennessee against Vanderbilt in on April 30. The BIG EAST tournament, for which the Golden Eagles missed out in 2016 due to a three-way tie-breaker, is scheduled for May 4-6 and hosted by Villanova.
