2002: Thompson became one of Marquette's more valuable players late in her freshman season. She made her career debut against Ohio (Aug. 30) and played in all but one match of the year. It was down the stretch where Thompson made her mark. She scored a point in five of Marquette's final nine games of the season. Only one other point scoring tally came outside of that stretch when she scored her first career goal against Tulane (Sept. 27). The tally was also her first career match-winning goal. The goal also came one match after her first career start in MU's 2-1 upset of Duke (Sept. 22). Thompson started her point-scoring streak with a pair of assists in matches against Louisville (Oct. 20) and East Carolina). Two matches later, she had her first multiple-point scoring match, logging assists on goals by Heather Goranson and Kate Gordon in a 3-2 loss to Vanderbilt (Nov. 2). She scored her second goal of the season in MU's final match, tying Wisconsin (Nov. 15) in the NCAA Tournament with her strike before the Golden Eagles lost, 3-2. Thompson's 10 points on the season were the third best on the team, trailing only Kate Gordon and Ashley Spakowitz. Thompson's 10 points were the most by a Marquette freshman since the 2000 season. At Naperville Central: A four time letterwinniner, Thompson was a huge scoring threat for Naperville Central. In four seasons, she scored 38 goals and added 58 assists. In her senior season, she was named to the Chicago Tribune scholar athlete team after scoring seven goals and 11 assists. She was named Soccer Player of the Year by the Naperville Sun following a 13 goal 18 assist junior year. She was a four-time all-area first team, a four-time all-city first team, a three time team MVP. She was also twice named to the Chicago Sun Times all-state teams and was a three time IHSCAA All-State selection. She was also a member of the ODP Region II team in 1999 and was a Region II pool player in 1998. On her club team, she was a member of the 2002 U-20 national championship team. The Eclipse club team that she was a member of won the U-20 USASA National Championship in the summer of 2001. She was a two-time letterwinner in basketball in her freshman and sophomore years before concentrating solely on soccer. Academically, she was an honors student earning the 4.0 Award every semester. She was also a member of the Spanish National Honor Society. Personal: Daughter of Patrick and Kathryn Thompson, Julie was born on Dec. 6, 1983, in LaGrange, Ill. Her brother, Andy was a soccer player at Penn State from 1996-2000. She is intending to major in biomedical sciences.
