No. 18 Marquette Wins Third Straight; Downs DePaul, 1-0
Oct. 2, 2005
MILWAUKEE - The No. 18 Marquette women's soccer team won its third consecutive match, downing DePaul 1-0 at Valley Fields. The win snaps a losing streak versus Blue Demons (2-6-3; 0-3-2 BIG EAST), dating back to the the 2003 season. The lone Golden Eagles (11-1-1; 4-1 BIG EAST) goal in the match came in the 16th minute, as sophomore Christy Zwolski headed in a corner kick from freshman Katie Kelly. Both teams combined for a close, physical match throughout the 90:00 of play - combining for 24 fouls. But Marquette's solid play on defense and in goal once again proved to be the deciding factor. "We were afraid of a letdown after Friday's win (4-1 vs. No. 5 Notre Dame), but we were able to prevail today," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We managed the game today very well and had a couple of opportunities out there. All in all, it was a great weekend for our program." The backline for MU was again tough to get through. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Boyer earned her seventh shutout for the Golden Eagles, stopping the lone DePaul shot-on-goal. "As much as we want to hold the edge in possession time and create offensively, our team works off of our defense. They were outstanding once again," added Roeders. Marquette outshot the Blue Demons, 7-4, with a shots-on-goal edge of 5-1. The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 7 they travel to Morgantown to face West Virginia before traveling to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 9.
