Weber's Two Goals Pace No. 11 Marquette to 3-0 Shutout of St. John's

Oct. 23, 2005

MILWAUKEE - Lauren Weber tallied two goals, pacing the No. 11 Marquette women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory at home today against St. John's. The Golden Eagles close out the regular season with a 16-2-1 overall record and a 9-2 mark in BIG EAST play. MU also wrapped up an undefeated 8-0 home slate.

The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute, as Weber took a pass from Christy Zwolski and deposited it on the left side of the net, past St. John's goalkeeper Jaime Beran. MU led at the break, 1-0. "The first half this afternoon was very similar to Friday night against Syracuse," said head coach Markus Roeders. "But credit our team, they raised their level of play for the next 45 minutes."

In the second half, Marquette tacked on two more scores. At the 63:23 mark, Julie Thompson scored her fourth goal of the season on a left-to-right play that was setup by Lindsay Michuda and Julia Egasti. Weber tallied her second goal of the match at the 67:08 mark on a rebound off of Red Storm goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera. Her scores were the fifth and sixth goals of the season for the junior midfielder.

"With the weather conditions (rainy and cold), it was tough to maintain possession and set up our offense. But Lauren Weber was able to make the most of her opportunities," Roeders said. "And our bench was terrific today. I thought Julia Egasti really did some good things for us, gave us a spark, and played terrific."

The two teams combined for 35 fouls - including 23 for the Blue & Gold - and three yellow cards. Marquette also held a 17-7 edge in shots, including 8-4 in shots-on-goal. Laura Boyer (71:52) made four saves and combined with Christy Smith (18:08) for MU's ninth shutout of the season. Both Beran (three saves) and Capinera (two saves) saw a half of action for the Red Storm.

With the win, Marquette finishes second in the "A" Division of the BIG EAST, behind Connecticut (14-3-1, 10-1 BIG EAST). The Blue & Gold have earned a bye into the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST championship and will host Louisville (11-7, 6-5 BIG EAST) - the third place finisher in the "B" Division. The date and time for the game is yet to be determined.

Notes: Marquette's record of 16-2-1 ties the school's all-time best record, through 19 games. In 2000, the Golden Eagles were also 16-2-1 ... MU's regular season winning percentage of .868 is a program-best ... The previous high was .854, set in 2000 when the squad finished with a 20-3-1 overall record ... The team's two losses also tie the previous season-low, set during 1997 (14-2-4) ... Marquette's nine shutouts so far this season ties for the third-most in a single-season.
