The Marquette University women's soccer team defeated Wisconsin 1-0 in exhibition action to conclude the Fan Fest festivities Thursday night.

The Golden Eagles controlled possession a majority of the night, battling through the water-logged conditions at Valley Fields during a trio of 25-minute periods. After just missing on numerous scoring chances, MU finally broke through midway through the final period. Senior Megan Jaskowiak served a perfectly-placed corner kick into the middle of the box and classmate Ally Miller was able to loft a header over the outstretched arms of the helpless Badger keeper.

"The scrimmage turned into the perfect test for our team," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We felt that we had some excellent spells, but also a large window in areas to improve on. Our possession was good and on both ends of the field and we showed that we can be a very good team when it comes to scoring and defending as a unit.

"Considering that this is a veteran team that plays with experience and confidence, we were especially pleased with Sofie (Schunk) in goal and Emily Jacobson in the centerback position," Roeders added. "Both are embracing new and more permanent roles. It was great to win and get a shutout as well. Our job now is to get healthier, fine tune and improve for next weekend."

Schunk played all 75 minutes in goal and made several quality saves on UW scoring chances. The Golden Eagles open the regular season on August 17 at 7:40 p.m. against St. Bonaventure at Valley Fields.
