WSOC Falls 2-0 to Wisconsin in Exhibition
Aug. 11, 2016
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team kicked off their 2016 campaign with a 2-0 exhibition loss to Wisconsin on Thursday evening at Valley Fields.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddy Henry made nine saves and started in net for the Golden Eagles, who featured All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selections Morgan Proffitt (midfield) and Liz Bartels (forward) in different positions from a season ago.
The Badgers struck first in the third minute as Sydney McGinnis got her foot on a cross from Dani Rhodes to beat a diving Henry back to her left. All-American Rose Lavelle added Wisconsin’s second goal of the opening frame in the 29th minute and the Badgers took a 2-0 lead into the half.
Perhaps MU’s best look of the night came in the 80th minute after a great individual effort from Cali Pyzdrowski kept possession and got the back up from the midfield. Pyzdrowski sent a cross to her left back towards the far side of the field to Molly Pfeiffer, who hit the crossbar with a header.
Redshirt sophomore Carrie Madden had good looking headers in each half that were just off the mark as the Marquette attempted to cut into its deficit.
The Golden Eagles, who are in the midst of training at Camp Whitcomb, returned to campus earlier in the day to be on hand for Marquette Soccer’s Fan Fest. They will return to Camp Whitcomb where they will remain through the weekend.
Marquette is 3-3-4 against UW in exhibition action over the last 10 years, including a 1-1 draw at then-No. 14 Wisconsin last season.
The Golden Eagles, who are the lone BIG EAST team to reach the conference quarterfinals in every season as a conference member, return eight of 11 starters and 23 of 28 letter winners from a squad that went 8-8-4 (5-3-1 BIG EAST) and finished fifth in the league’s 2015 regular season standings. Marquette also returns 93 percent of its goal scoring production from last season.
Marquette kicks off the 2016 campaign at Nebraska on Friday, Aug. 19 at 7:05 p.m. in Lincoln, Nebraska.
